SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Former San Francisco Fire Commissioner Don Carmignani suffered serious injuries after he was attacked with a metal pipe in San Francisco's Marina District Wednesday night, the San Francisco Police Department said. He is expected to survive, but recovery "will be a long time," according to his father Ray Carmignani, who spoke with KRON4.
The aggravated assault occurred in the area of Magnolia Street and Laguna Street at about 7:20 p.m. SFPD said the victim was attacked by an unknown person and hospitalized.
Former member of the San Francisco Police Commission Joe Alioto Veronese tweeted that Carmignani was attacked by a group of homeless people in front of his home and is "fighting for his life" at San Francisco General Hospital.
Carmignani underwent a successful surgery on Thursday to remove a piece of his skull, has 50 stitches in his face, and a broken jaw, according to his father. No other procedures are scheduled until he starts to recover from surgery.
SFPD officers received a description of the suspect and located him near Laguna Street and Lombard Street. Garret Doty, 24, was arrested without incident.
Doty was booked into San Francisco County Jail for charges of assault with a deadly weapon and battery causing serious bodily injury.
This attack happened just one day after the fatal stabbing of prominent tech entrepreneur Bob Lee in another affluent San Francisco neighborhood near the Bay Bridge, which prompted several tech leaders to question the city's safety.
