A guest worker at Coral Beach Club who was pulled from the water on Thursday after getting into difficulty while swimming has died in hospital.

ZBM News reported that the 44-year-old, a waiter at the Paget resort named Angelito Manila, had been praised by general manager Nik Bhola as an exemplary member of staff.

Mr Manila, who came to work on the island last year from the Philippines, was said to be married and had a 20-year old son.

Last week, he was brought on shore by members of the public and given lifesaving treatment after surfacing unresponsive in the water at about 3.45pm.

Mr Bhola told staff and club members that Mr Manila had died this morning.

The general manager said he “exemplified professionalism, kindness and dedication to our service principles”, and would be remembered for his “positive energy and genuine warmth”.

The club has launched a fund to support Mr Manila’s family in the Philippines, along with providing counselling for his colleagues in Bermuda.

This marks the third swimming-related death of a foreign national in 2024, after Jamie Lambros, from New York, lost his life this month at Horseshoe Bay while going to the aid of a fellow swimmer in distress.

Hyon Duk Shin, a tourist from Pennsylvania, died in March under similar circumstances after going to the rescue of a youngster struggling in high waves.
